Welcome to the memorial page for

Janet Hague Dickens

January 10, 1930 ~ January 14, 2018 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Janet Hague Dickens, 88, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018 in Ft. Myers, FL. Janet was born Jan. 10, 1930 in Maywood, IL, the daughter of Harvey L. and Irene (Greiner) Hague. Janet was a smart, funny and strong woman who focused her life around her children. A graduate of Proviso High School and North Shore College (Chicago). Janet worked as an x-ray technician at Chicago’s Physicians and Surgeons Hospital until her marriage in 1951. Although the family moved several times, she considered herself, at heart, a Chicago girl. As a young, single parent with three children, she moved to Concord, NH to be near to close friends and found a supportive community in which she thrived and channeled her energy, pluck, and resilience to raise her children and start a new life. She began a professional career in electrology, a field in which she did much to advance the profession, working to initiate state licensing and serving as a mentor to new electrologists. In addition, she became a self-made, successful real estate owner and investor. A breast cancer survivor of over forty years, she always credited Dr. Paul Lena of Concord for her survival. With patience, humor and much love Janet raised three children who inherited her independent spirit, strong-will, good heart and (occasional) stubborn streak. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her family, bringing a smile to a friend’s face, lending a helping hand and offering advice. She never met a recipe she couldn’t embellish or a home improvement project that couldn’t be done. Her home was never complete without a cat to sit beside her. She maintained childhood friendships throughout her life and made new friends at every opportunity. She felt so fortunate to reside in Florida for the last many years within minutes of her closest lifelong friends. She is survived by her beloved children, Amy Dickens, Pittsfield, NH, and Erik Dickens (Nancee) of Dallas, TX, cousins Jack (Marge), Bill (Charyl) and Bob (Deanne) Greiner. In addition, she is survived by her “sisters of the heart,” Barbara Hunter and family, and Eileen Lightell. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Penelope Dickens. The family would like to acknowledge and thank all her friends and the staff of Shell Point Retirement Community Ft. Myers, FL for their love, friendship, and thoughtful care. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Chapel Hill Gardens, Oakbrook Terrace, IL. In lieu of flowers and to honor Janet, invite someone to join you for coffee or a meal, brighten their day with conversation and a smile and be sure to adopt your next pet from a shelter.
