Mary Charles Acuff Chernin, 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 1, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Mary Charles was born to Elbert and Una Acuff in Fort Myers on April 11, 1929. She was a graduate of Fort Myers High School, class of 1947. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Harry Chernin. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years and her family: daughters Leslie Morreale (Ray), Nancy Romstadt (Joe), and Betsy Vereb (Roger); her granddaughters, whom she greatly loved: Devon Morreale Parker (Trey), Rachel Morreale (fiancé, Miles Eckert), and Amy Romstadt; and her great grandson, Douglas Harold Parker IV, "Harry," whom she adored. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Una and Elbert Acuff; mother and father-in-law, Elizabeth and Ben Chernin; siblings, Coleene Acuff Huddlestun (Harold), Ann Marie Acuff Hicks (Jack), Elbert Owen Acuff who was killed in World War II.
Mary Charles was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and prior to that a member of Central United Methodist Church for most of her life. She was also a part of Fort Myers Womans Community Club, Edison Pageant of Light, and the Lee County Pioneer Club. Mary Charles had a servant's heart, demonstrated daily by her actions not only to her family but to her many friends, her Church, and everyone she met. She was a proud Fort Myers native. She was a wonderful homemaker, creative and talented, Church worker, full of boundless energy, and a volunteer extraordinaire. In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in her name to Hope Hospice or the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct 3rd at Harvey-Englehardt Funeral Home from 5-7 pm. Services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Oct 4th at 11 am with internment at the Fort Myers Cemetery at 2 pm.
