Carol G. Redeker Obituary

Carol Gilbert Redeker was born Nov. 18, 1916 to Dagna (Erickson) Gilbert and Carey Albert Gilbert in Elgin, IL and passed away Feb.1, 2018 in Ft. Myers, FL. Graduating from the Elgin Academy at age 16, she attended Wheaton College (IL) to obtain a teaching certificate and later the Univ. of Colorado and Northern Illinois Univ. to maintain her qualification. Her first job was teaching in the one room elementary school that she had attended as a student. She was married July 11, 1941 to William E. Redeker, son of Ethel (Bosworth) Redeker and Ernest Henry Redeker of Elgin. Carol and Bill celebrated their 75th anniversary the same year that she reached her 100th birthday. She was preceded in death by her only brother, Craig (in WWII), her parents, and her husband, Bill.

Throughout her years in Elgin, she was active in the PTA, Brownie and Girl Scouts, Junior Woman’s Club, Elgin Health Center, First Baptist Church, Every Wednesday Literary Society, and bird counts at McGraw’s Wildlife Foundation. She was an expert at knitting, cross-stitch, and loved reading and books. A proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and always a teacher, she passed on lessons in all areas of life.

Carol was a lover of nature and an avid birdwatcher. Her bird life list had 617 North American and Hawaiian species and also many other birds worldwide. She was active as a member of the Kane Co (IL) and Caloosa (FL) Audubon Clubs and participated in annual Christmas bird counts into her 90’s. She and Bill enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities and were advocates for environmental issues. Remembering to “Take only memories leave only footprints,” camping was a preferred way of spending vacations. The Boundary Waters area was a particular favorite. They were great travelers, both in the United States and abroad.

She is survived by daughter Mary Ann Redeker of Seattle, WA, daughter Martha Redeker (Robert Carter) of Salt Lake City, UT, grandson Joel Carter (Cynthia) of Memphis, TN, granddaughter Hannah Pringle (Tico) and great-grandchildren Trey, Ty and Truth of Las Vegas, NV.

A private service and interment will be in Elgin, IL at a later date. Donations may be made to the conservation group of your choice in memory of Carol Redeker. No flowers, please.
