Tribute

Dorothy “Dee” Shafer (68), passed on May 16th surrounded by family in Fort Myers, FL after a hard-fought battle with aggressive cancer. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, June 5th at the American Legion in North Fort Myers where she was a proud member.
The daughter of Robert Vernon and Dorothy Jane Moff, Dee was born on January 16th, 1953 in Alliance, Ohio. She worked for over 20 years in her adopted home of Southwest Florida as a painter, wallpaper hanger, and entrepreneur. As the owner of several painting and wallpapering businesses, she dedicated her life to adding color in and around the homes and businesses in her community. She adored Florida and the Margaritaville lifestyle it afforded her. She was never without a pair of flipflops, a bathing suit, and sun-tan oils. Dee has two children, Angel Baer and Richard Shafer as well as two grandchildren, Jacob and Corey Baer.
Dee was a passionate woman who devoted her time and energy to many causes. She served as the president of the Ladies Auxiliary within the American Legion and worked with Amvets. She made a common practice of personally supporting homeless veterans by doing laundry, making blankets, serving food and helping wherever she could. In addition to her service with veteran organizations, she championed child welfare through her participation in the Forty and Eight and running an Annual Quarter in her community that benefitted children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Dee volunteered as a poll worker in several recent elections and challenged those she met to have a voice in politics.
Dee is survived by Tom Reid, her two children, two grandchildren, her brothers James Moff and Larry Moff, and her dogs Bambino and Molly. She is predeceased by her beloved sister Mary Jo Moff, and her brothers Richard and Robert Moff. Dee fiercely loved and was loved by her friends, family, and community. She knew no strangers and treated everyone like a friend. She will be missed.
