Tribute

James John (Jim) Hannan died on Saturday, September 26, 2020. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on January 31, 1928. He attended Fairfield University (CT), a Jesuit university, where he was introduced by a Jesuit friend to his future wife, Jean (Schneider), to whom he was married for 67 years. Jim and Jean raised five children in Camillus, New York, where he was an auditor for Sylvania Electric Company.

Above all, Jim was devoted to his church and his family. He loved family life. He enjoyed time spent with his family camping (especially on Cape Cod, MA), cooking outdoors, going on ski trips and making furniture. He was active in the Camillus Ski Association, where he enjoyed packing the snow on the slope with a “snowcat.” On occasion, he may have even been seen driving the snowcat home from the ski slope during very snowy weather!

In 1980 Jim & Jean moved to Cape Cod, MA, where they lived for 25 years. During this time Jim was very involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They attended Christ the King parish in Mashpee, where Jim was Director of the Food Pantry – which served 3 towns on the Cape. In recognition for his St. Vincent de Paul work, Jim was honored with several awards: The Marion Medal awarded by the Diocese of Fall River, the Top Hat award given by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the “Heroes We’ll Never Forget” award given by the Town of Mashpee, in recognition for his service to the needy. He and his wife were also awarded the Christ the King award in recognition of their service to the parish.

For several years Jim and Jean lived in Albany, NY, where they served as the Directors of Ministries for the Catholic members of Avila Retirement Community. They moved to Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers Florida nearly 10 years ago, where Jim was an active volunteer at the Community Thrift Store, where proceeds help Shell Point provide quality services to senior adults in the area.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children Patricia A. Jones (Donald) of Cape Coral, FL, Thomas E. Hannan (Robin) of Bridgeport, NY, and Margaret M. Hannan of Newark, DE, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sons Michael J. and Patrick J., and daughter Mary Jane (MJ).

For safety precautions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim may be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
