Tribute

John Richard Steenhoek
July 10, 1969 – April 21, 2022
John was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan; first child of Don and Joni Steenhoek. He is survived by his parents, sister Jennifer Carter, nephews Jacob and Alex Carter, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

John graduated from Appleton East High School in Appleton, Wisconsin and earned an Associate Degree from Florida Atlantic University.
He worked as a Department Manager for Family Fair in Grand Rapids, Michigan and as a Warehouse Technician for Medtronic’s, first in Grand Rapids and then relocating to Memphis, Tennessee where he lived for ten years until he moved to Fort Myers in the Fall of 2021.

John was a gentle spirit, more concerned about the welfare of others than his own wellbeing. He was a published poet and prolific writer, the family turned to John when they wanted something proofread and improved.
He loved to play video games with his nephews, often winning and then showing them how they could win. He was an avid basketball fan; March Madness was his favorite season of the year.

He was a Minister’s son, exposed at times to the unpleasantness of church. He loved Jesus and understood that Jesus is the source of his salvation. He was not impressed by ridged religion and did not suffer fools well.

He marched to the sound of a different drum, out of step at times with others but in perfect step with the drum that he heard. His Mom often says, “John was my sweet, sweet son.”

The memorial service for John Steenhoek will be on Saturday May 7th, 10 AM at Faith United Methodist Church, Fort Myers, Florida.
