Richard S Grant passed away at the age of 95, on July 31, 2017 in Fort Myers, Florida. Richard was born to Glenn and Ella (Wilson) Grant in Fairfield, Iowa on September 23, 1921.
After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University, he enlisted in the Army and served for 3 years during WWII. While a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, stationed in Okinawa, he met his future wife, Army Second Lieutenant, Betty R. Pixley, who was serving as an emergency room Registered Nurse.
After his discharge from the Army, he joined Owens Corning Fiberglas in Kansas City, Kansas, and became Plant Engineer in 1951. Later, he transferred to Corporate Headquarters in Toledo Ohio, where he held numerous positions, becoming Vice President Building Materials Manufacturing in 1969. He was named to the position of Vice President Manufacturing Technology in 1982, before retiring to Sanibel, Florida in 1984.
Richard and Betty were big supporters of Iowa State University where they were named Parents of the Year in 1972. In 1974, he was elected to the Iowa State University Foundation Board of Governors and named to the Order of the Knoll. In 1978, he was awarded the Alumni Recognition Medal and in 1980, was named to the Marston Club. He was also elected to the Iowa State University Achievement Foundation Board of Directors. He was named as Cy’s Favorite Alum in 1986.
Richard and Betty lived on Sanibel for 43 years. He served as President of Beachview Men’s Golf Association; President of Beachcomber Condo Association; and member of Sanibel/Captiva Lions Club.
Richard is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Betty, and sister, Helen Hill. Richard is survived by daughter, Sharon (Dave) LeMoine of Rio Verde Arizona, Stu (Pat) Grant of Silver Lake Ohio, and Steve (Sandy) Grant of Alpharetta, Georgia. Grandchildren Doug (Mara) LeMoine, Brian (Heather) LeMoine, J.R. (Emily) Grant, Megan (Ric) Chura, Jenny (Rodney) Grant, Kristen (John) Swartz. Great Grandchildren Max, Leo, Fairlee, Connor, Patrick, Ella, Olivia, Emma, and Steven.
Memorial Service will be held at Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers, Fl. 33901, Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Iowa State University Foundation, Richard S. Grant Scholarship, Fund #1006631, 2505 University Boulevard, P.O. Box 2230, Ames, Iowa 50010-2230.
