Rey had a subtle but tremendous influence on my life. The last time I spoke with Rey was at the funeral of his friend, Don Johnson, in September 2015. It had been a number of years since I had seen Rey and Betty, and we had a lot of ground to cover. We talked about one of our favorite places, Camp Shamineau. Rey was on the Shamineau Board a number of years, and served as Chairman in the late '60s and early '70s. We reminisced about one of the large construction projects in those years, the camp dining hall over looking Lake Shamineau. Rey mentioned that he and a crew were on one side to roof the new dining hall, and my dad, Glendon Nordell, and a crew were on the other side of the roof. They had to finish the roof in one day because it was going to either rain or snow, and they did finish. They had recruited about 100 men for that day's work.
What I had forgotten, however, was Rey's personnel work on behalf of Camp Shamineau. Rey told me while he was Board chairman, he decided it would be a good idea to have a woman on the Board. He told me it took him quite a while to convince the other Board members. In that conversation in 2015, Rey told me had decided that I was the woman to be on the Board, something I had not known.
Rey did not tell me why he decided on me for the Shamineau Board, but, since learning of his home-going, I have been trying to figure out, why me? I finally started remembering some conversations we had.
Rey was on the Shamineau Board when they considered adding sailing as a waterfront activity. It was the middle 1960s, and I was in high school. I pestered Rey once too often to add sailing. He finally said, "Well, sailboats cost a lot of money. What are you going to do about that?" So I carried a gallon-sized glass jar with me to church and all Twin City FCYF activities, and cajoled everyone to add money to the jar to buy a sailboat. There was finally enough money, just in time for camp. As Rey's challenge had been met, my persistence must have stuck with him.
Rey's lobbying for a woman Board member was successful, and I was elected the first woman on the Board, in 1975. Rey's delight and obvious enthusiasm for his success with the other Board members was very obvious 40 years later. As Rey said in 2015, "And look where it got you!" Rey and Betty and I laughed and laughed and laughed. We were laughing because, 21 years later, I ran in a hotly contested election in Hennepin County, Minnesota, and was elected to be a Judge on the state trial court.
I am a grateful beneficiary of Rey's enthusiasm for Camp Shamineau. My knowledge of God and the importance of His word, the Bible, have been greatly enhanced because Shamineau was a meeting place with God, just as the camp's motto said. It was there I was challenged to memorize Scripture, counsel campers and other counselors, work on staff, direct camp for a week, become a short-term missionary in Bolivia, and think about becoming a lawyer and a judge.
Rey's charming manner and infectious smile did not hide his calculating mind. He was driven to support what he believed. Rey was a go-getter whose persistence and persuasive conversation helped others, me for one, to look at challenges as opportunities. I will miss him. My husband joins me in giving you, Betty, our deepest sympathy, but we rejoice that Rey is with his Savior.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Betty - and the rest of the family. The last couple of months were definitely a blessing from the Lord for you. We will always treasure our times with the two of you - especially our last cruise and Rey running down to get us front row seats right next to the stage for each nightly show. He was just like a kid doing that for us! We love you all tons.
